Free Alternatives to Adobe Apps

Short answer

You can replace the core Creative Cloud apps with free software: Photoshop → PhotoCraft, Patchy or Compositor (or the long-standing GIMP); Lightroom → LightCraft or RAWmakase (or darktable); Illustrator → VectorCraft or Scissor (or Inkscape); Premiere Pro → FilmCraft or Drift (or Kdenlive). The chart below shows which app replaces what, on which platforms.

13 community-reviewed free alternatives to Adobe.

Adobe Creative Cloud is powerful, but it is also a subscription you keep paying for as long as you use it. If you mostly need a photo editor, a raw developer, a vector tool or a video editor, there are free alternatives that cost nothing and do not expire. This page maps the main Adobe apps to free and open-source replacements. Most of them were submitted to offstack by the people who build them and reviewed before publication; a few long-standing projects are marked as editorial picks so the list stays useful. Many of the newest options are young and moving fast, so we show licenses, platforms and maturity side by side and tell you when something is still in alpha. Pick the Adobe app you want to replace, open its page for a detailed comparison, and keep the files and the money that are yours. Made a free Adobe alternative? You can submit it.

Scissor

A free vector and pixel design editor that runs entirely in your browser. No install, no account, no upload.

Scissor combines vector and pixel editing in a WebAssembly app: pen, curvature and shape tools, type on a path with OpenType features, pixel layers, image tracing, symbols, brushes, effects and boards. It imports SVG, PDF, .ai and PSD and exports SVG, PDF, PNG, JPEG and WebP. Documents are saved as files on your own computer, and nothing is uploaded. The editor itself is closed source; only the manual, samples and issue tracker are public.

Free Adobe Lightroom alternatives

LightCraft

Your photos. Your pixels. Your machine.

A fast photo library and non-destructive raw developer, written from scratch in pure Rust. No account, no cloud, no telemetry, no subscription. Alpha. Signed builds for macOS, Windows and Linux; optional AI masks download a separate model only if you choose to.

RAWmakase

A fast, Lightroom-compatible RAW photo editor for macOS, Linux and Windows. Free, open source, no subscription.

RAWmakase is a non-destructive RAW developer written in Rust with Lightroom-style Library and Develop controls and GPU acceleration. It can import a Lightroom Classic catalog with ratings, flags, keywords and compatible develop settings, without touching the original catalog or your photos. Early software (v0.4.x): rendering may change between versions before 1.0, and some export formats (WebP, AVIF, JPEG XL) are not available yet. Optional weekly anonymous usage stats are off until you agree; macOS releases are signed and notarized, while the Windows installer is not code-signed yet.

Redlamp

A native RAW photo editor for Apple Silicon Macs that keeps Lightroom's Develop workflow.

Redlamp is a native RAW photo editor for Apple Silicon Macs (macOS 26+), built in Swift and Metal around a Lightroom-style Develop workflow with the same panel layout, slider names and shortcuts. It offers masking with on-device AI masks, healing and removal, focus stacking, lens corrections, film simulations and presets, and it saves edits in sidecar files next to your photos. It is free, with no account and no cloud; AI runs on your Mac, and models download on first use. Caveats: it is alpha software (v0.3.3), Mac-only for now (iPad and iPhone are planned), and most commits are co-authored by an AI coding agent. It can use Adobe camera profiles you already have from Lightroom Classic or Camera Raw, but ships none. The app checks for updates (Sparkle) and fetches What's New notes from redlamp.app. Bug reports you send are posted publicly as GitHub issues.

Rembrandt

A free, local RAW photo editor with on-device AI masks, denoise and super resolution. No account, no subscription.

Rembrandt is a non-destructive photo editor and library for RAW files from over 1,000 cameras, developed on the GPU. It offers masks (brush, gradients, AI subject, background, depth and people), generative remove, AI denoise, super resolution, HDR, panorama and focus-stack merges, lens corrections, film looks and .cube LUTs, plus a Lightroom-style library with ratings, flags, keywords and on-device smart search. You can also describe edits in words, like "golden hour, shadows +25". All AI runs on your computer and edits are saved as XMP next to your photos. The desktop editor is free forever; it can also run as a small self-hosted server you open in a browser. Builds are not code-signed yet, and a paid mobile app and cloud sync are planned separately.

Free Adobe Photoshop alternatives

PhotoCraft

The image editor you already know how to use.

Layers, masks, adjustment layers, layer styles, type, vectors and brushes in a native app written entirely in Rust, with real layered PSD files. Open source, offline, and yours. Early alpha: not yet a Photoshop replacement for daily professional work. Signed builds for macOS, Windows and Linux; a browser build is available to host yourself.

Patchy

A free image editor that keeps layered PSD files editable, with Photoshop-style workflows and shortcuts.

Patchy focuses on accurate PSD compatibility: text, vectors, masks, layer styles and Smart Objects stay editable when you open layered Photoshop files. It also imports Affinity and PDF artwork, supports classic plug-ins and JavaScript scripting, and works with limited palettes without flattening. The browser version runs locally through WebAssembly. No telemetry and no uploads; desktop builds are signed.

Compositor

A free, open-source Photoshop alternative for Mac, built around compositing and photo post-processing.

A native macOS image editor made by a solo designer who wanted Photoshop's workflow without the subscription. It has layers and folders with the full set of Photoshop blend modes, layer and clipping masks, adjustment layers (Curves, Levels, Hue/Saturation, Gradient Map and more), and GPU-rendered layer effects. Retouching tools include spot healing, clone stamp and liquify. Official builds are Mac only (Apple silicon, macOS 26+), signed and notarized; there are no official Windows or Linux builds.

Free Adobe Premiere Pro alternatives

FilmCraft

Professional video editing, rebuilt from scratch.

Source and program monitors, a real timeline and every trim mode, in a native editor written in pure Rust - down to its own codecs. Alpha: the maker rates it about 56% ready for full production work. Signed builds for macOS, Windows and Linux. Optional transcription and natural voices download their models only when you ask.

Venturi

A Linux-first, performance-oriented open-source video editor in Rust, with keyframes, color tools and an audio mixer.

Venturi is an editing-focused nonlinear video editor written in Rust. It offers multi-track cutting with ripple delete, compound clips, magnet snapping and clip speed from 1% to 10,000%, keyframes on every parameter with a curve editor, titles, filters and transitions, and color correction with wheels and GPU scopes in 16-bit float. Audio is finished in place with a per-track mixer, EQ, compressor, loudness normalization and voiceover recording. Playback and export are hardware accelerated (NVDEC, Vulkan video, VideoToolbox, NVENC), and timelines move to and from other NLEs such as DaVinci Resolve through OpenTimelineIO. A built-in MCP server lets AI agents drive edits. Free and open source under GPL-3.0. Alpha: the save format may still change; macOS build is for Apple Silicon and ad-hoc signed.

WeftCut

Free, open-source desktop video editor for macOS, Windows and Linux that you can also hand to an AI agent over MCP.

WeftCut is a free, open-source non-linear video editor for macOS (Apple Silicon), Windows and Linux. It has an A/B-roll timeline, keyframes with a curve editor, effects and transitions, captions, a role-based audio mixer and hardware-accelerated export, and everything you do by hand can also be done by an AI agent: a local MCP server exposes all editing tools, so Claude, Codex or any MCP client can edit the project you are watching, with checkpoints you can restore in one click. AI features are optional: connect your own MCP agent; transcription uses your own API key or an optional local model. Pre-1.0 (v0.5) and under active development. The macOS build is Apple Silicon only and not notarized (allow it via Privacy & Security > Open Anyway); the Windows installer is unsigned. Windows and Linux builds download updates automatically by default (can be turned off). Licensed MIT; installers bundle FFmpeg under its own licenses.

FableCut

Free, open-source Premiere-style video editor that runs in your browser, with a JSON timeline that AI agents can edit live.

FableCut is a free, open-source non-linear video editor in the style of Premiere Pro that runs in the browser. It has Source and Program monitors, multiple video and audio tracks with trim, split, snap, ripple delete, lift and extract, keyframes, masks, filter presets, an audio mixer and color tools, proxies for 4K, HEVC and ProRes footage, and export presets for YouTube, Shorts, Reels, TikTok and X. The whole timeline is one project.json file, so you can edit by hand or let an AI agent such as Claude Code, Codex or any MCP client change the cut while the UI updates live. Runs in the browser: a free hosted Studio (Chromium-based browsers only, no account) or a local install with Node.js 18+. The hosted Studio works on a folder on your own disk and never uploads your clips. AI agents can optionally edit the timeline via MCP; no AI key is needed for manual editing. The hosted Studio exports H.264 MP4 only. Frequent releases (v1.16.0 on 20 Oct 2026). Licensed MIT.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free alternative to Adobe Creative Cloud?

There is no single free app that replaces all of Creative Cloud, but each core app has free replacements: PhotoCraft, Patchy or GIMP for Photoshop, LightCraft, RAWmakase or darktable for Lightroom, VectorCraft, Scissor or Inkscape for Illustrator, and FilmCraft, Drift or Kdenlive for Premiere Pro.

Which free Adobe alternatives work on Linux?

Patchy, PhotoCraft, LightCraft, RAWmakase, VectorCraft, FilmCraft and Drift all have Linux builds, as do established tools such as GIMP, darktable, Inkscape and Kdenlive. Adobe does not offer Creative Cloud apps for Linux.

Can free alternatives open Photoshop and Illustrator files?

Some can. Patchy focuses on keeping layered PSD files editable, Compositor imports 8-bit RGB PSD and PSB files, Scissor opens .ai, PSD, EPS and PDF files, and VectorCraft imports PDF-compatible .ai files. Complex documents may not convert perfectly, so keep your originals.

Are these Adobe alternatives really free?

Yes. Every project listed must offer a working free version with no expiration date, not just a trial. Most are open source; Scissor is free to use but closed source, and it is labelled as such.

Are the new alternatives ready for professional work?

Some are mature, such as GIMP, darktable, Inkscape and Kdenlive. Several newer projects, including LightCraft, VectorCraft and FilmCraft, describe themselves as alpha. Try them on a copy of a real project before switching completely.
